Employability in the AI-Driven World: The Three Skills Every School Leaver Needs

We don’t know exactly what work will look like in 50 years. But here’s one thing I know for sure: human expertise, emotional intelligence (EQ), and AI skills will be essential.
So, if you’re 15 or 55 and thinking about the future, these three skills will help you stay relevant, employable, and in control of your career. Let’s break them down.
1. The Human Touch (EQ + Practical Presence)
AI is powerful, but it still struggles with emotional intelligence, intuition, and human connection.
Think about it. AI can diagnose diseases, but it can’t comfort a scared patient in a hospital.
It can analyse football player stats , but it can’t motivate a nervous 10-year-old before their first penalty kick. And although AI can recommend care strategies, it can’t offer the warmth of a real human caregiver.
Skills that require empathy, social intelligence, and real-world adaptability — like coaching, therapy, caregiving, or leadership — will always be in demand. AI might assist, but it won’t replace the value of a human’s presence.
2. A Professional Skill
This is your specialised knowledge — your thing. Whether it’s law, engineering, psychology, accounting, or medicine, your expertise gives you credibility.
For example, a physiotherapist taps into their scientific knowledge of body mechanics — their professional skill, while using their intuition and physical touch to treat patients, therefore combining the human touch and professional skill.
The best professionals combine expertise with emotional intelligence. AI can assist, but people still trust human judgment.
3. An AI Skill
If you haven’t started playing around with AI, start now. It’s not “the future” — it’s already here. And it’s the third side to the triangle for a future-proof career.
Want to be a pilot? AI-driven flight simulators are standard training tools. Curious about psychology? AI can help analyse behavioural patterns. And if you’re going into business, AI-driven analytics are essential for decision-making.
The best way to learn is by doing, as the saying goes. Experiment. Many AI tools are built into games, simulations, and workplace platforms. The sooner you get comfortable with AI, the easier it will be to integrate it into your career.
How AI is Changing Psychology (and What That Means for Your Career)
AI is reshaping psychology, from detecting early mental health risks to assisting therapists. But while AI can analyse patterns, it lacks the human connection needed for deep emotional support.
One of AI’s biggest contributions to mental health is detecting early signs of crisis through language analysis. Research shows that people at risk of suicide use more self-focused language (“I,” “me”). They tend to express negative emotions (“hopeless,” “worthless”), and withdraw socially.
AI can catch these signs faster than traditional methods, giving professionals a chance to intervene earlier, saving lives by preventing suicides. In fact, AI tools can now detect real suicide notes with 74.4% accuracy, which is more consistent than human experts can. This is huge! And it’s opening up new career paths in AI-powered mental health.
Some examples include:
1. AI-assisted therapists who can detect trends using AI. However, humans still give the emotional support.
2. Ethical AI analysts who ensure AI respects privacy and ethical boundaries.
3. Lawyers and policymakers to shape fair laws. AI-driven psychology raises huge legal and ethical questions.
4. Influencers and educators, who can explain the technology and help shift societal perceptions. AI mental health tools would still need to win public trust.
The Bottom Line
The future belongs to those who adapt. AI is transforming every industry, but human skills still matter.
If you master the human touch (emotional intelligence + adaptability), a professional skill (deep expertise in your field), and an AI Skill (so you can work with the tech, not against it), you’ll be unstoppable.

Great article, Frieda! The examples you shared make it easy to see how AI enhances, rather than replaces, human strengths. As I am nearing the end of my career, I’m amazed by the massive impact AI has had on my professional life. Truly an inspiring read!"
